In yet another act of generosity, a journalist in Kerala has cancelled his daughter’s engagement function and along with the family of his future son-in-law, decided to donate the money kept aside for the ceremony, to the Chief Minister’s Distress Relief Fund.
Taking cognisance of the devastating situation in his home state, PM Manoj, the resident editor of Deshabhimani, the mouthpiece of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), held discussions with his daughter’s soon-to-be husband’s family, and both sides agreed to cancel the engagement which was scheduled to take place on Sunday in flood-hit Kannur.
“The engagement and ring exchange of my daughter Devi and that of Advocate Sudhakaran, the son of Advocate Gokul, was scheduled for August 19. But considering the unprecedented natural disaster which Kerala has been facing, the function is being cancelled.
We, both the families, have decided to donate the money set aside for that to the Distress Relief Fund of the Chief Minister,” says a Facebook post by Manoj.
GiveIndia and The Better India have come together to help Rebuild Kerala by supporting 41,000 affected families. You too can be a part of this movement and help us raise funds for the NGOs working to rehabilitate these families. If all of us come together with a small monthly contribution, we can make a real and meaningful difference in helping restore normalcy to those who need our help the most.

The decision, Manoj argues, comes on the back of the “extraordinary natural crisis” facing Kerala, and that the timing of the entire event seemed inappropriate when millions of their fellow state residents are suffering. Such acts are among the many The Better India has highlighted.

On Friday, meanwhile, the Chief Minister’s office announced that the death toll in the state has risen to 324 since August 8 with over 2,23,000 displaced. The red alert remains in place across 12 of the 14 districts in the state with the exception of Thiruvananthapuram and Kasargod.
The Indian Meteorological Department has predicted a reduction in rainfall over Kerala from August 19 (Sunday) but warned that all districts except Kasargod could suffer heavy rainfall for the next 48 hours.
